summary Cal reminisces on Uigenna games.
notes It's been entirely too long since I've read Wraeththu, plus I never read the second trilogy at all, so the characterization might be all kinds of wonky. Especially Cal's voice. God why did I decide to write in the first person.

The air in Jael is crisp and clean, and all too good for sharpening the memory.

Perhaps I’ve become too comfortable in these royal houses. It was so much simpler to live as barbarian kings, lawless and reckless. Nostalgia for the Uigenna; now what does that say about me? We were hardly more than children, with more power dropped into our laps than we had any idea how to use (young, stupid, and strong; a deadly combination). And that was the fun of it; the novelty, the feeling that after growing up scrabbling over piles of brick suddenly you’d become king of the world. Indestructible. God, how stupid.

But it wasn’t all knifepoints and Molotov cocktails, not quite. There was a peculiar calm in the anarchy, settling down wherever we damn well pleased, sitting together to clean our weapons or brag or tease each other. And of course there were the childish little games, keepaway and wrestling and mine’s-bigger (boys will be boys, even after they become something else). And the aruna—well of course there’s always aruna, but back then before we knew any better, it wasn’t this whole big deal, all rose petals and sacraments.

And there was Zack, dark and wild and beautiful and mine. Oh yes, the games we played…

It’s almost eerie how clearly I can remember. There’s something strange in the air here in Jael, I swear.

It would start simply enough, with a jeer, followed by a challenge. “Almost got yourself killed today, didn’t you”—a harmless joke, because we were far too strong for that, of course—and then a brag, and then “I’d like to see you try.” And then it was just moments to rolling around on the ground, jumping on each other like animals. We left our shiny metal toys out of it, for the most part.
Zack would tackle me to the ground, and I’d wriggle my way out of it and kick his feet out from under him, and we’d punch and kick and shove and scramble until one or the other ran out of steam and gave in. Here and there along the way we’d pause to share breath or to nip at skin; it was greedy and fierce, still fueled by our adrenaline.

Zack would win, most of the time. I can still remember that wicked little sparkle in his eye when he laughed, holding my hands tight over my head.

The loser was soume. That was what it meant to us, back then; submission, defeat. So much that we didn’t understand. As Uigenna, we really did lack all sense of privacy. If we started humping at each other too close to where the rest of the group was hanging around, we’d be casually kicked until we moved out of the way, nothing more. Even the aruna was insincere. We scarcely touched each other’s minds, and when we did, all we saw was bravado. We were infinitely more interested in exploring one another’s bodies.

It was nothing but childish bickering, in the end. Children playing at being warriors, children playing at being gods. No wonder our time was gone before we knew it.

But god, was it fun.
